Greening the Nation Programme

Greening the Nation Programme is a DEAT funded programme which is being implemented by SANBI in 5 different Provinces, namely, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape. Service providers contracted by SANBI to implement the projects in the various sites at provincial level are, Mbizana Indigenous, Abongi Bemvelo (ABEMS), Lukholo Training and Development, Asizame Landscape and design, Temo Thuo, Imvelo Landscaping and People Management Solutions (PMS).

The fundamental duties of the service providers include, amongst others;

•  The greening of schools with an indigenous garden of no less than 600m2 supplemented by a vegetable garden of no less than 150m2. The indigenous gardens are used as an educational resource for environmental education by the schools

•  Creating jobs for the local community;

•  Developing indigenous gardens and parks in the various communities

•  Provide training to the workers on the project to ensure that this improves future employment opportunities;

•  The creation and development of local SMMEs where the projects are being implemented

Given the above scope, to date much has been achieved in a very dynamic and often very challenging work environment. This also reflects the level of commitment to meeting the programmes development agenda, which includes amongst others, poverty alleviation, job creation and skills development.
